Privacy Policy

The Los Angeles Conservancy has adopted this Privacy Policy to explain why we collect particular information online and how we protect your privacy. This page describes our information gathering and dissemination policies for the websites located at http://www.laconservancy.org/, http://www.lac.laconservancy.org/, http://www.modcom.org/, and http://www.curatingthecity.org/.

By visiting these websites, you accept the practices described in this Privacy Policy. The  Los Angeles Conservancy reserves the right at any time and without notice to change this Privacy Policy by posting such changes on this page. Any such change will be effective immediately upon posting.

This Privacy Policy includes:

  • What information the Los Angeles Conservancy collects and how we use it
  • Use of "cookies" ("Remember Me")
  • What types of information we share with other organizations
  • What choices you have regarding the collection, use, and distribution of your information
  • How we keep your information secure
  • How you can contact us for more information

What Information the Los Angeles Conservancy Collects and How We Use It
The Los Angeles Conservancy collects non-personally identifiable information about you through your Internet Protocol (IP) address, computer settings, and/or most recently visited website. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you use the Internet. We use IP addresses to help diagnose problems with our server; administer our sites; analyze trends; track users' movement through the site to identify popular content and areas for improvement; gather broad demographic information for aggregate use in order for us to improve the site; and deliver customized, personalized content. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.

When you complete a transaction on one of our websites, such as purchasing a membership or merchandise, registering for an event, or signing up for email updates, we require certain types of information in order to process your transaction. This information may include your name, email address, address, phone number, and credit card number. We do not store credit card numbers, and we do not collect Social Security numbers.

In addition to information required to process transactions, we also request optional information about you such as your interests and email format preference (HTML vs. text). We use this information to plan and deliver content that you find useful, and to tailor the content you receive from us to your specific interests. At any time, you can change your preferences or unsubscribe from any of our email updates by updating your interests or contacting the Conservancy at info@laconservancy.org or (213) 623-2489.

One of the services we provide on our websites is the option to quickly and easily forward information about a Conservancy event, issue, etc. If you choose this option, we ask you for the name and email address of each friend to whom you forward this information. The Los Angeles Conservancy will automatically send the friend a one-time email with the information you selected to forward, along with the option for your friend to sign up for the specific activity mentioned and/or to receive one or more of our periodic email updates. The Los Angeles Conservancy stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time email.

Use of "Cookies" ("Remember Me")
When you complete a transaction on our website, we give you an option called "Remember Me," which is checked by default. Leaving this box checked stores information on your computer in the form of a "cookie" (a small piece of text that stores information on your browser in your computer's hard drive). Use of cookies can make your online experience more convenient by saving information such as your password, content preferences, and contact information. We also use this information to track the effectiveness of our online communications and identify areas of improvement. Many people consider the use of cookies to be an industry standard.

If you would rather not receive cookies from our websites, simply uncheck the "Remember Me" box during your transaction. We will then not place a cookie on your computer, though your online experience will be less convenient (e.g., you will have to re-enter registration data and contact information when completing a transaction on our website, and you will need to log in to receive personalized content). You can also set your browser not to receive cookies from any website, and/or to notify you when you receive a cookie.

Sharing Information
In no case does the Los Angeles Conservancy share phone numbers or email addresses or permit other organizations to solicit our donors through either of these mediums.

On occasion, we do exchange mailing addresses with like-minded organizations. These list exchanges are for one time only, and the mailing lists are provided directly to fulfillment centers (not the organizations themselves). If you would not like your mailing address shared with other organizations, you can have your information removed from such list exchanges by submitting a written request to member@laconservancy.org or the Los Angeles Conservancy, 523 West Sixth Street, Suite 826, Los Angeles, CA  90014, Attn: List Exchanges.

Security
All information provided to the Los Angeles Conservancy is transmitted using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. SSL is a proven coding system that lets your browser automatically encrypt, or scramble, data before you send it to us. We also protect account information by placing it on a secure portion of our website that is only accessible by certain authorized employees of the Los Angeles Conservancy. Unfortunately, however, no data transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of such information.

For your convenience, our websites contain links to other, third-party websites. Please note that when you click on one of these links, you are entering another website for which the Los Angeles Conservancy has no responsibility. We encourage you to read the privacy statements on all such sites, as their policies may be different than ours.

Ambassador Hotel
Ambassador Hotel (site of)
3400 Wilshire Blvd., Wilshire Center

Designed by Myron Hunt with later alterations by Paul R. Williams, the Ambassador Hotel was one of Los Angeles' defining historic sites and a main catalyst for the development of Wilshire Boulevard. Built on a former dairy farm miles from downtown, the 24-acre resort hotel was a hit from its opening on New Year's Day 1921. It quickly became a tourist attraction, a fashionable winter residence for East Coast society, and a prominent social center. The Ambassador was home to the Cocoanut Grove nightclub, L.A.'s premier night spot for decades; host to six Academy Award ceremonies and to every U.S. President from Herbert Hoover to Richard Nixon; and the site of the tragic assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. The hotel closed in 1989. After a fierce preservation battle spanning two decades, the building was demolished by the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2006.
